Cher has made known the passing of her mother, Georgia Holt at the age of 96.

The 76-year-old legendary singer posted a tweet which reads ‘Mom is gone’ and has since prompted many of her Twitter followers to send in condolences.

Cher’s publicist confirmed the news to media sources but did not provide any further information, regarding the cause of death or the precise date.

Sometime in September, Holt was rushed to the hospital with pneumonia.

Former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was one of the well-known people to offer Cher her sympathies, writing, “So sorry for your loss, my friend.”

Holt, who was born Jackie Jean Crouch in Arkansas in 1926, learned how to sing and play the guitar from her father. She won various skill and beauty contests as a youngster and started acting in her 20s. She was cast in films like ‘A Life of Her Own’ and ‘Grounds for Marriage’ as well as television shows like ‘I Love Lucy’ and ‘The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet’ during her career.

Holt struggled as a single mother after their first marriage broke down, even briefly placing Cher in a Catholic orphanage while she sought to become financially independent.

1980s recordings of Holt’s country album Honky Tonk Woman were forgotten until 2013, when she discovered the tapes in her garage and forwarded them to her musical director. The album, which featured a duet with Cher, was released that year.

Georgia Holt is survived by her daughters, Cher and Georganne LaPiere; her partner, Spencer; and her grandchildren, Chaz Bono and P Exeter Blue I.
