Despite having previously said he wouldn’t attend the ceremony if nominated, actor Brendan Fraser has received his first-ever Golden Globes nomination.

The list of candidates for the 2023 Golden Globe Awards was just released by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which organises the ceremony. Along with Austin Butler (Elvis), Hugh Jackman (The Son), Bill Nighy (Living), and Jeremy Pope, Brendan Fraser has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for The Whale.

Being nominated for a Golden Globe is a significant career achievement, but Fraser’s supporters have criticised the organization, with one calling them “spineless.”

Fraser claimed in 2018 that Philip Berk, the former head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), had inappropriately touched him at a luncheon in 2003.

In response, Berk issued a statement asserting that the accusations against him were completely false and without merit. HFPA apologised to Brendan Fraser despite Berk not being prosecuted.

In an interview with CBS News, Fraser said that the assault claims “derailed” his career.
