Movies guarantee immortality, says CAAP SG Madu Chikwendu
Frontline filmmaker and administrator, Madu C Chikwendu,has declared that movies matter because amongst other things, it is the seventh art and only arts can guarantee peoples immortality. Chikwendu who is the Secretary General of Confederation of African Audiovisual Professionals (CAAP) made this statement in his welcome address at the inauguration of Imo State chapter of Guild of Elite Motion Picture Creators GEMPC at Owerri, Imo State, South East Nigeria. Chikwendu who doubles as Chairman of GEMPC Board of Trustees stated that because the arts capture images, utterances, writings, it has the capacity to preserve them for eternity.
In his words ‘This is why famous religious , political and even unknown individuals continue to live with us simply because they have been captured in film ,sculpture , literature and other artistic forms’’ In his paper, titled, Polemic Against The 7th Art As Clap and Dance the former President of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP) further opined that “film should be considered the most important human activity not merely because it is both an art and a science but also because of its wide ranging contributions to humanity by documenting our history and culture’.
Chikwendu also said ‘’it’s well chronicled prophetic capacity, didactism, social commentary, premier position as a form of human expression and finally the humongous economic impact.” The Imo State chapter of GEMPC was inaugurated at a crowded ceremony at Rockview Hotel, Owerri.
