Irish actor BJ Hogg who starred in Game of Thrones and BBC Northern Ireland comedy series Give My Head Peace has died. He was aged 65.

Hogg’s agent Geoff Stanton said in a statement, “We are all devastated at the news of BJ’s passing. He was an exceptionally fine actor with tremendous range and a flair for comedy.”

The comedy team behind Give My Head Peace, the Hole in the Wall gang, said:

“BJ is part of the Give My Head Peace family. He was a fine actor, great colleague and a true friend. Our thoughts are with his wife Elish, son Nathan and daughter Abigail at this time.”

Hogg was best known for playing Big Mervyn in the BBC Northern Ireland series Give My Head Peace for more than 20 years. In “Game of Thrones”, he played Ser Addam Marbrand, one of the chief knights in the service of Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) and old friend of his son, Jaime (Nikolaj Coster Waldau).

BJ Hogg travelled the world as an actor, writer and director and was a classically-trained musician who toured with Big Bands. He performed at Belfast’s Lyric theatre and international venues in Russia and elsewhere.

He was also known for his performance in 1996 film Dance Lexie Dance, which was nominated in the Best Live Action Short Film category at the Oscars.

His other credits include BBC’s The Fall, Holby City, and his last credited role was in the 2020 biographical drama film “The Windermere Children”.
