The Eagles Park, Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Sururlere, Lagos, will come alive today, as leading heavy weights in the country’s music industry will storm the venue for the Street Foodz Festival. Top on the bill are the duo of Zlatan and Teni, who will be joined by other artistes and comedians.

Conceived as a family event, with food vendours expected to exhibit different Nigerian dishes, the event will see the finalists do battle in a cooking competition to determine who becomes The King of Street Foods. The judges made up of three high profile individuals in the food and nutrition space will have the task of picking the best out of the six finalists.

The judges are Etteh Assam popularly known as Chef Etteh, one of the top street food and grill chefs with over 18 years of experience; Adetomi ‘Imoteda’ Aladeokomo popularly known as Chef Imoteda is a Nigerian Chef and co-owner of Eko Street Eat, a company that specialises in bringing innovative twists to Nigerian street food and finally Adedamola “AskDamz” Ladejobi, a certified Personal Nutritionist and Weight loss expert.

Competing for N1,000,000 cash prize and gift items are Martha Edem of Akara Café, who serves Akara and different pap options alongside key stars of an English breakfast menu; Box D Food by Fego Daniels, who serves rich, flavourful shawarma with a generous dollop of free hugs, and Crispy And Grills by Christopher Omowa, who makes crispy fries and crispy juicy toasties, with grilled-to-perfection American Style Barbecue all made from Nigerian produce and staples.

Other finalists are Chef Segun Anifowose of King Glab Cuisine, which serves up a wide assortment of street food style meals; Simple Corner currently under the able management of Chinonso Attansey. This business, which was set up by her parents, serves up nkwobi, peppersoup and isi-ewu at their joint; and Soma Ofada By Oluwaseyi Gunre, who claims to serve the best Ofada rice and sauce.

According to the Managing Director, Maxima Media Group, producers of Street Foodz Fest, Oluwafemi Ogundoro, the festival aims to promote local cuisines, as well as promote the spirit of entrepreneurship among young people.

“It’s been a long journey for us. Our Judges have taken time to go through each and every entry, the contestants were chosen purely on merit and based on a potential to give our local street foods culinary recognition in the ‘glocal’ food space. Now, we are down to the final six contestants, who will battle for King of Street Foods. We are truly excited to embark on this journey and I believe it’s also important to note that it’s the first of its kind in Africa. This is all in a bid to ensuring that we change the food narrative in Nigeria and put the African food on the world food map.”

On the choice of Zlatan and Teni for the grand finale, Ogundoro explained, “If you are talking about street foods festival, then Zlatan and Teni are the perfect choice to thrill guests. It’s going to be a family event, with different games to be played.”
