As much as I hate to say it, these are dangerous times we live in.A friend of mine entered one chance and got robbed on the bus home over the weekend. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but we can’t help but think how bad it could have gotten. Sometimes when you leave a place, possibly after hanging out with friends, you never know what’s going to happen. If you’re alone, the risks are even higher.

I still don’t understand why a good number of our streets don’t have working streetlights, but that’s a rant for another day. Many of us don’t bother to step out of our houses after a certain time because it’s too dark and we worry it’s dangerous. Some people do, but are still very aware that they might be putting themselves in danger. As women, these risks are often higher than with men because we are perceived as vulnerable. A simple stroll down the street can end in a terrible disaster.

This is why you should get a Companion

You’re not always going to have a physical companion to walk or take a cab with you somewhere, but the Companion app is the next best thing. Once you download the app and register your information, it’s pretty easy to use. You set your destination, and choose people from your contact list you want to accompany you on your trip. Once you do this, your chosen companions get a text alerting them that you have selected them to to be a cmpanion. Best part; they don’t even need to have the app installed to be your companion.

As you walk home, you can ialso dentify areas that make you feel uncomfortable on the map and call the police with one tap if there is an emergency. If you start running, your phone falls to the ground, or you don’t make it to your destination on time, you’ll get a message asking if everything is OK — if you don’t respond in 15 seconds, the app alerts your companion. The entire time, your companions are following your progress via a map on their phones.

This video kind of explains it –

In terms of safety, I think this app is pretty great. I’ve tried it and it does work very well. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is the ‘Call the police’ feature because I don’t want to call in a false emergency. I’ll definitely update if I ever do try it though. I recommend every woman who doesn’t feel safe walking alone or taking a cab by herself download this so the people who care about you can watchout for you.

Companion is available for iOs and Android
