As the festive season approaches, comedian and media personality Freedom Atsepoyi, popularly known as Mr Jollof, has called on Nigerian artists to reconsider their performance fees. He said their charges are becoming “unrealistic.”
In a post shared on his Instagram story, Mr Jollof appealed to artists to be “reasonable” so that the December period can remain a time of joy and entertainment rather than disappointment.
He wrote: “Dear Nigerian music artists, the current rate of billing is becoming unrealistic. If it continues, this festive season might not deliver the energy we all expect. Fans, promoters, and communities are struggling with costs. There will be little justification to pay such high amounts.”
The entertainer added that if artists do not adjust their fees, event organisers might not be able to host as many shows, leading to a dull festive period.
This post has stirred reactions on social media.
Instagram user @ezeqwesiri commented, “Whilst I understand Mr Jollof’s plight, you have to understand how big these guys are.”
Another user, @chillzonchill, accused the comedian of trying to guilt-trip artists, saying, “Manipulation on the highest level.”
With December fast approaching, many Nigerians are watching to see if performers and promoters will find a middle ground that keeps both business and fan excitement alive.
