Exploring places you can only get to by foot is a good way to burn fat and get your body in good shape. There are plenty of trails to enjoy but, to fully enjoy your hike, there are some things you should have.

So what makes hiking in Nigeria different? Firstly, most hiking sites in Nigeria don’t have trails marked out or hiking directions. So, to hike, always have a tour guide or a local to show you around.

Our comprehensive backpacking checklist is your tried-and-true guide to packing smart for hiking trips in Nigeria.

What to bring

  • Closed-toe shoes: You need light shoes like sneakers that are easy to move and run in.
  • Comfortable clothing: Wear a light and comfortable t-shirt with trousers.
  • Insect repellent: Apply to skin, clothing or other surfaces to discourage insects like mosquitoes and soldier ants rampant in dense forests.
  • Camera: What better way to capture those wonderful hiking memories than with a camera?
  • Sunscreen: This offers essential protection from the sun rays.
  • Power bank: There will be nowhere to charge your phone, so take a fully-charged one along.
  • Water bottle and snack pack: This is for when you get dehydrated and hungry.
  • A good mood: Go hiking with lots of smiles and laughter.
