Disney has released a trailer for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which is the final instalment of the franchise’s latest trilogy.

The trailer premiered at the Disney’s D23 Expo, the official fan club for The Walt Disney Company.

The trailer opens with footage from all nine Star Wars films. A voiceover from Luke declares that there have been “a thousand generations, but this is your fight.” Rey, Poe, and Finn (John Boyega) are preparing for the biggest fight of their life. Battleships tear through the skies, as Rey and Kylo Ren meet in the middle of a war-torn planet, ready to fight.

The most interesting scene in the trailer: Rey is wielding a red, double-sided lightsaber. Her hood and red lightsaber hint at the possibility of her going to the dark side, as both are typically associated with the Sith, which are enemies of the Jedi.

One scene shows Rey fighting against Kylo Ren, the main antagonist of the film, atop a ship. In another shot, dozens of Star Destroyer ships can be seen in formation, possibly preparing for battle.

J.J. Abrams is back in the director’s chair, picking up where he left off after directing “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The upcoming film follows the Rian Johnson-directed “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

For British-Nigerian actor John Boyega who plays Finn, there are speculations that he may not reprise the role again in any future projects. In an interview with MTV, when asked about his future as the character, he said:

“Honestly, the bottom of my heart, I don’t think I am. I don’t think I am. I really do feel that way.”

He also added that:

“Honestly, no, seriously, I just – this is really that movie, I think everyone doesn’t believe it, but this is that war that just ends everything. So, I’m just like, wow, you know?”

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” releases on December 20 (U.S release).
