Sanitary Choices: Tampons, Sanitary Towel Or Menstrual Cups ?

Most ladies question their sanitary choices when it is that time of the month. So what do you use? Sanitary towels, tampons or menstrual cups? Let’s run through their uses, basically the same but in different forms.

According to Wikipedia, a menstrual cup is a type of feminine hygiene product which is usually made of medical grade silicone, shaped like a bell and is flexible. It is worn inside the vagina during menstruation to catch menstrual fluid. A tampon is a mass of absorbent material, primarily used as a feminine hygiene product, they are designed to be easily inserted into the vagina during menstruation and absorb the menstrual flow. A  sanitary towel is an absorbent item worn by a woman while she is menstruating.

Side effects;

Using sanitary towels for prolonged periods can encourage the growth of the staphylococcus bacteria. The occurrence of these symptoms in conjunction with tampon use may be a sign of toxic shock syndrome: diarrhea, vomiting, sunburn-like rash, dizziness, cold and fever.

Side effects from tampons is due to exposure from too much rayon and can cause: nausea, vomiting, chest pain, headaches, and many others. Rayon is not just found in tampons and pads, but a lot of clothes are made from it as well.

Menstrual cups are prone to discomfort in the beginning, some are uncomfortable with the process of emptying and cleaning a menstrual cup regularly. They can be messy as well and inconvenient because of the changing procedure.

Overall,the menstrual cups are the hygienic choice, although the application is the only issue with it and here in Nigeria, most people gag at the thought of a menstrual cup.
