Veteran entertainer and rights activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has said Nigeria is currently battling a deeper level of corruption than what the country witnessed under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He made this statement in a recent interview with content creator Jay, which was shared online on Tuesday, August 5.

According to Charly Boy, the present state of governance has become more dangerous and corrupt, to the point that it has multiplied what Nigerians endured during the last administration.

“The corruption we face now is worse than what we experienced during Buhari’s time, times 10. All I’m interested in is if our votes would count in 2027, how do we get these monsters away from leadership positions. It’s all about ‘Mr A thief pass Mr B?’ That’s what they’ve come to do.”

The 75-year-old, also known as Area Fada, said corruption in Nigeria is not a tribal issue. He explained that politicians across all ethnic groups have joined hands in looting public funds.

“To the people stealing, you’d see Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba men there. All the tribes are represented in the stealing. We all know the game at this point and I’m hoping to see ‘rig and die’ come 2027. Blood will flow and before it gets better, it’d get worse here.”

Charly Boy, who became popular in the 1980s for his rebellious style and political messages, said Nigerians must now demand accountability ahead of the 2027 elections.

He also spoke briefly on the controversy surrounding the renaming of a Lagos bus stop previously named after him. He dismissed the action as irrelevant.

“Let this bus stop thing not be a distraction because this is quite a toxic environment and this environment hardly lets anything grow.”
