On Saturday 15 December 2018, a group of women staged a march at Yaba market in Lagos to protest the sexual harassment and somewhat derogatory sexual slurs that accompany it.

Anybody who patronises popular markets in Lagos Like Oshodi, Yaba, Balogun and Tejuosho markets will be familiar with the incessant touching, catcalls, invasion of personal space, forceful pulling and insults given to visitors to the market especially to women.

These traders see it as a way to woo people for patronage without questioning the rationale behind forcefully pulling someone to wares that are in plain sight.

The market men were not too pleased with the effrontery of women to protest this treatment and reacted violently throwing water and insulting words. Some even chanted, “we must touch.”

Following the Market march, some people have taken to Twitter to react to the boldness and the actions of the traders in Yaba Market.

While some are of the opinion that there is nothing wrong with the groping because some women actually love the treatment.
