Selena Gomez Looks Happy And Healthy After Getting Kidney From Friend
Selena Gomez shared a very vulnerable photo on her Instagram page on Thursday which revealed that she had gotten a kidney transplant due to her struggle with lupus.
Lupus is an autoimmune disease, where the body mistakenly attacks its own tissues, sometimes including the kidneys. One healthy kidney is all the body needs, and Lupus tends not to come back after the operation because the drugs that prevent kidney rejection are also very good for treating lupus.
The causes of lupus are unknown and symptoms may include high blood pressure, bloody or foamy urine, unexplained weight gain, or swelling in the legs, ankles or around the eyes.
In an amazing act of friendship and kindness, a kidney was donated by her friend Francia Raisa, who is an actress best known for her role as Adrian Lee on the TV series The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Bring it On: All or Nothing.
She wrote, in an Instagram post early Thursday that she had been out of the spotlight this summer because she was recovering from the procedure.
In the post, Gomez and Raisa were holding hands while lying side-by-side in hospital beds.
Gomez also posted a picture of a scar on her abdomen.
The post did not reveal Gomez’s current condition or say where or when the procedure took place, although TMZ reported that while she was in Chicago in May for a concert by her boyfriend, The Weeknd, Gomez was rushed to a hospital for kidney failure.
Gomez revealed her lupus diagnosis in 2015 and took some time off in 2016 as she struggled with the disease as well as anxiety and depression.
The star said she needed the transplant for her overall health, and looked forward to sharing more about her transplant journey with her fans. In the meantime, however, she wanted to thank her health team and Raisa.
Gomez’s longtime friend, Zoey 101 star Chris Massey, shared on his own Instagram page how proud he was of both her and Raisa. The duo grew up together on TV and have clearly been through a lot over the years.
The star was spotted on the set of Woody Allen’s latest movie. She looked happy and healthy and unfazed by all the attention she has been getting after revealing that she underwent a kidney transplant.
Gomez looked pretty in an orange sweater, burgundy mini skirt, a long coat, white trainers and round sunglasses, and she rocked a bouncy bob with a side part.
