Will Smith has opened up to Trevor Noah on The Daily Show about the famous slap saga at the Oscars in March.

During the promotion of his film “Emancipation”, Will Smith who described the night as “horrific” said of the incident “And it’s like I understood the idea where they say hurt people hurt people. That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time.”

“And I guess what I would say, you just never know what somebody is going through. I was going through something that night. Not that that justifies my behaviour at all.”

He confirmed that he “lost it” when he climbed the stage and slapped Chris Rock acknowledging that his action has had an influence making it hard for “hard for other people.”

Smith mentioned in his memoir that he was afraid of conflict as a child, and Noah brought up the unfavourable comments that have been made about Smith and his family online.

In response to that, he remarked, “It was a lot of things. “It was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother, you know. All of that just bubbled up in that moment.

Smith noted that he was not who he wanted to be at that moment of the incidence. Smith addressed the slap and apologised to the public on social media in July.

Smith has received a penalty from the Academy in the form of a 10-year attendance ban from the Oscars.
