A 27-year-old man, identified as Oke Loya, suspected to be mentally challenged, has strangled a 17-year-old student to death in Ese-Odo Local Council of Ondo State.

The victim, Timibra Meretighan, a student of Ijaw National High School in Arogbo, was said to be writing the Junior West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) when the incident happened.

The Guardian gathered that Loya managed to gain access to the school premises while it was raining, after which he was allegedly subjected to mockery by some of the students.

The enraged man, who was allegedly infuriated by the action of the students surged at them before grabbing Meretighan and strangling him to death.

An eyewitness, who craved anonymity said: “The students scattered in a state of panic while Meretighan, who was unable to flee at the same pace as his peers, became an easy target for the assailant.

“The man seized Meretighan, held his head under his armpit and strangled him to death.”

The eyewitness said the untimely loss of Meretighan has left the community of Arogbo in mourning.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Olufumilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, said that the suspect had been apprehended and that the investigation had already begun.

She said: “The Principal of Ijaw National High School came to the station and reported that one Oke Loya, aged 27, who took a shed at the school security gate during the rain, strangled to death one Meretighan Timibra, aged 17, of Arogbo.

“The suspect claimed that the students called him a madman. He has been arrested and detained.”
