The 2024 ‘Wake Up’ Youth Conference has ignited a spark of inspiration in the hearts of young Nigerians, who graced the event virtually and physically in Lagos.

Hosted by a non-profit organisation, Afara Africa, the youth conference with the theme: ‘Ignition’ brought together diverse leaders from business, music and arts, public service, and religion to challenge, inspire, and equip young minds for change.

The Convener / Founder of Afara Africa, Lekan Oyebanjo, narrated his life story from being a worker at a local bakery in Ogun State to leading a chain of businesses in tech, real estate, and automobile industry.

“Plan God into your purpose, you have no idea how far God can take you,” Oyebanjo told young people while noting that the journey might be rough but it is in preparation for a destination ordained by God.

President of Coscharis Group, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, shared nuggets for success that helped him navigate a rough path of being an entrepreneur from a young age to becoming a millionaire before 30.

“You must have a strong desire to succeed. Be bold to make decisions and be determined to excel. Your belief and drive to succeed must be greater than your fear to fail,” Maduka said.

Oluwayomi Uteh, a director at The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) emphasised the importance of young people being dependable, stating, that “ability is necessary for success, but dependability is essential,” and reminded the audience that success requires not only talent but also unwavering dedication.

Challenging the audience to break free from societal pressures and discover their authentic selves, popular musician Akinade Ibuoye known as Gaise Baba urged attendees, “Don’t think survival; think significance. Think about how you impact your world.”

Head, Corporate Finance & Treasury of Lafarge Africa, Victory Olumuyiwa, also echoed this sentiment, stressing that individuals are like gold mines and, if undiscovered, others may exploit them.

The conference also addressed the critical issues of identity and giving back to society. Special Adviser to Lagos State governor on climate change and circular economy, Titilayo Oshodi, underscored the importance of self-discovery, stating, “It is in knowing yourself that you can eliminate negativity from yourself.”

Oshodi urged young people to embrace the philosophy of giving, stating that “when you give something, you will never lack something”. She said staying connected with God throughout life’s journey will teach individual perseverance to trust the process that leads to destiny.

TitOluwa Sam-Oladapo, who spoke passionately about the need for young individuals to discover themselves and avoid negative influences, added that “your essence must come from within, not from without”.

She cautioned young people against identifying themselves solely through external factors.
