Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and other agencies charged with the monitoring of building projects have been called upon to sit up to minimise the alarming rate of building collapse in the country.
Former Commissioner for Lands and Survey in Delta State, Chief Fred Majemite, made the call when he visited the Asaba Specialist Hospital to commiserate with victims of a recent church building collapse at Okpanam.
Majemite, who said the increasing rate of building collapse in urban and rural communities was traceable to quacks in the industry, advocated regular monitoring of different stages in the construction of buildings by professional bodies and individuals.
At the paediatric and female surgical wards of the hospital, the frontline politician, who thanked God that the patients were recuperating fast, pledged to assist government in offsetting their medical bills. He equally gave the victims cash to support their feeding expenses.
Commending the state government for constituting a committee to unravel the cause(s) of the collapse, he asserted that the committee constituted by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa would proffer solution to the problem.Â
Majemite equally condoled with those who lost dear ones at the unfortunate incident, and prayed God to give them the fortitude to bear the loss.Â
He further called on well-spirited individuals from the oil-rich Delta to rally round the state government, the families of the deceased and those in the hospital to cushion their pains, as the ugly incident calls for prayer and physical support, encouragement as well as a time to fellowship with those affected directly or indirectly.Â
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Asaba Specialist Hospital, Dr. Peace Ighosewe, conducted the Urhobo chief round the wards.
