Man faces criminal charge over alleged N1.2m theft

The Police in Lagos have charged a trader, Chinaecherem Afunanya at the Magistrate’s court, Apapa, Lagos, for allegedly stealing N1, 200,000 from his master, Livinus Ireka.

The complainant (Ireka) said the defendant stole from his shop (Ireka Cosmetic shop) at Mushin, Lagos.

Ireka said: “I kept some money in the shop over N30, 000, by the time I came back, I didn’t see the money and I noticed that my goods went down. When I checked the value of goods that got missing, it was worth N1, 000,000 and I checked my other money I kept, it was missing, making it a total of N1, 200,000.


“By the time I went back to his house to question him, he had run away. I immediately contacted the police and reported what had happened. The police subsequently caught him and got him arrested.”

Afunanya on his part didn’t deny the allegation leveled against him by Ireka.

Following his arrest, the Police charged him with the offence of stealing at the Magistrate Court, Apapa.

The sole count states: “That you Afunanya on November 12, 2020 at about 11:00 at Amuwo Odofin Lagos, in the Apapa Magisterial District did steal total sum of N1, 200,000 property of Ireka and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 287 of the criminal laws of Lagos State Nigeria, 2015.”

The defendant had since pleaded not guilty.

At the last proceedings, the trial could not proceed due to absence of the defence counsel.

Consequently, the trial Magistrate adjourned the case to March 13, 2023 for continuation of trial.
