Patrick Ofuonyeadi

A 48-year-old man, Patrick Ofuonyeadi is in need of N20 million for bone marrow transplant and other treatments.

His family said they have exhausted their resources to keep him alive but all financial efforts proved abortive as more money is needed from bone marrow transplant and spine surgery.

According to a medical report from Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Kaduna State University, the patient is currently undergoing treatment for relapsed multiple myeloma (an advanced form of bone marrow cancer) and has been on cyclical doses of cytotoxic chemotherapy and other supportive therapy.

Consultant Haematologist, I.P Ijei Enesi who signed the report, said he is being prepared for an autologous stem cell transplant, prior to which he still requires further chemotherapy as well as radiotherapy to achieve remission.

According to the consultant, the cost of the treatments is estimated at between N20 million and N50 million.

When the hospital was contacted, the hospital staff, Gloria Bahaqo said the patient has been receiving treatment at the centre.

Lamenting, Ofuonyeadi’s cousin, Ikechukwu Nwaolisa said: “We are calling for support. Ofuonyeadi is a brave individual, who is facing the challenges of cancer with unwavering strength and determination.

“Ofuonyeadi took ill and was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (Cancer of the white blood cells and bone marrow).

“Ever since, he has been battling with it. He has done numerous x-rays, three MRIs, one biopsy, and many other medical tests and examinations at Synlab Limited, Nigerian Army Reference Hospital 44 Kaduna, and at the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Kaduna State respectively, where he has been receiving treatment since January 2020.”
