MDCN inducts 416 doctors trained abroad

Dr Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare.

Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has inducted 416 foreign-trained Nigerian doctors to practise medicine in the country. MDCN warned them against ethical misconducts and not to join the Japa bandwagon effect.

Speaking at the induction, yesterday, in Abuja, the Minister of State for Health, Dr Tunji Alausa, who was represented by his Senior Special Adviser, Dr Ismail Ajatu, urged the doctors not to be in a haste to leave the country to practise abroad, adding it was not all bed of roses outside the country.

He appealed to the doctors to stay and help in repositioning the health sector and contributing their quota to national development. MDCN Registrar, Dr Tajudeen Sanusi, noted that Nigeria-trained doctors were well-sought after globally because it is believed that Nigeria would not lower standards.

Sanusi told the inductees, preparing for housemanship, that as house officers, they were not members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), adding that though strike is recognised in the Labour Law, procedures must be followed.

Sanusi said the MDCN Disciplinary Tribunal would not hesitate to suspend any doctor found guilty of professional misconduct, irrespective of the status.
