Group threatens to shut down NUPRC over activities of oil companies

The President of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Olu Andah Wai-Ogosu, has condemned the call for the resumption of oil and gas exploration in Ogoni land led by the Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers of Ogonis in Rivers State.

Recall that some traditional rulers, led by the Paramount Ruler of Kpite Tai, King Samuel Nnee, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, among others, had, during a meeting at the State House with President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, called for the resuscitation of oil production in Ogoni land.

But the MOSOP President, in a swift reaction, said that the Ogoni people are still focused on the remediation of their devastated environment and not ready for the resumption of oil activities.

He pointed out that those who participated and paraded themselves in the meeting with the President as leaders and representatives of Ogoni are not recognised by MOSOP or any of its affiliates and organs.

MEANWHILE, a civil society group, Niger Delta Activists Forum (NDAF), has issued a seven-day ultimatum, threatening to shut down Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) headquarters over activities of multinational oil companies in the Niger Delta.

The group threatened to mobilise 10,000 community dwellers to shut down the NUPRC headquarters, threatening to occupy the premises until their demands are met.

This was made known, yesterday, in a letter issued to the NUPRC, which was copied to the President Bola Tinubu, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) within the Niger Delta, National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and other relevant stakeholders.
