MVNO licensee plans N30b investments for underserved markets

A mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), Zegtel, licensed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed plans to spend N30 billion over the next five years to extend telephone connections to the underserved population.

Zegtel stressed that as a future-thinking company driven by advanced technologies, Nigerians and Zegtel’s subscribers are set to not only enjoy top-notch voice and data connectivity, but a wide-range of value-added services not known to the Nigerian market.

It added that the company is focused on providing the underserved market a whole new experience beyond data and voice capabilities. What most subscribers know and have enjoyed primarily is voice and data operations.

The executive Chairman of Zegtel, Prof. Victor Izegbu, during a private meeting with stakeholders said in other developed markets, subscribers enjoy an extensive array of value-added services on their mobile networks.

In his words: “Unfortunately, in Nigeria, subscribers are mostly exposed to just the basic offering of voice and data. Zegtel is set to change that narrative with our product offerings.

“Zegtel has its focus high up, with a strategic plan to spend N30 billion over the next five years to extend telephone connection to the underserved population.”

“With the minds behind this MVNO, strategic alliances, and product offering design, the future of telecoms is here with Zegtel,” Prof.Izegbu together with fellow directors; Olumide Oladapo, Juliana Edewor, Dr.Alban Okonkwo and Edozie Izegbu outlined the strategic roadmap for the new MVNO company. It has an agreement with a renowned British MVNO management company to roll out Virtual mobile telephony over the next six months.

They stated that MVNOs are not a new concept however, their introduction in Nigeria is a recent development aimed at addressing the needs of the underserved and unserved market, estimated to be between 35-100 million people. They added that MVNOs provide competitive telephony services leveraging on the infrastructure of the existing Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).
