National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has officially launched the NAFDAC Green Book, a comprehensive repository of NAFDAC-registered drug products with 7,030 entries.

The book launch took place in Lagos at NAFDAC’s office yesterday with stakeholders, including representatives from the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) and Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN).

At the launch, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Moji Adeyeye, emphasised the importance of transparency as a key aspect of NAFDAC’s identity and highlighted the agency’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of Nigerians.

The Green Book, comparable to the US FDA’s Orange Book, serves as a dynamic database that consolidates detailed data on registered products. The DG noted that the book was still a work in progress, with vaccines currently being entered, followed by other products.

She said: “Today’s launch is a collaborative effort between NAFDAC and various stakeholders, underscoring the importance of partnerships in advancing public health. It reflects our shared commitment to building a robust, sustainable and sustainable healthcare workforce framework for pharmaceutical oversight and ensuring that Nigerians have access to safe and effective medicines.”

“May it serve as a beacon of progress, guiding us toward a future where healthcare is characterised by transparency and accountability and most importantly, the well-being of our citizens.

“I therefore want to seize this opportunity to appreciate our well-earned team stakeholders, without whom we would not be talking about regulating all NAFDAC-regulated products. We do hope that you will find the platform very user-friendly and efficient. I invite you to join us for the next round of the Green Book.”

The Director-General applauded the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, acknowledging their role in advancing public health.

Speaking on NAFDAC’s drug information system during the launch, Head of ICT Unit, Olufemi Balogun, said: “The app offers a comprehensive list of all NAFDAC-approved medicines, including their names, strengths, dosage forms, route of administration, ATC classification and other marketing authorisation details. The App serves as a single source of truth for healthcare professionals, patients, and the general public, who seek reliable and accurate information about medicines that have been certified safe for use.”

The Deputy Director of e-registration and data management, Dr Dumoi Afam, said: “Our DG came up with the idea of us having a one-stock shop database where we can see all products that are registered by NAFDAC, starting with medicine, because it is very critical to public health and so we are starting with that and that is why we launch this app now to be able to help our patients, medical practitioners, health providers check the status of any medicine that is brought to them for purchase.”
