The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) is seeking collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) to enforce compulsory vehicle insurance.
The Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive of NAICOM, Olusegun Omosehin, last week, visited the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to seek support from the force in the area of compulsory insurance enforcement.
The commission also appealed for collaboration in other areas that would help to achieve the goals of the sector.
Omosehin noted that it is unlawful for individuals to drive on Nigerian roads without a valid motor insurance policy and stressed that less than a quarter of vehicles on the roads have valid motor insurance.
He disclosed that the ECOWAS Brown Card has been captured in the upgraded premium for third-party motor insurance cover by NAICOM, allowing vehicles to travel across the West African sub-region.
He underlined the need for digitisation platforms to authenticate the validity of vehicle insurance, a system, he said, is already being implemented by the Lagos State government.
In response, the IGP assured of the NPF’s full support in enforcing third-party insurance. He said that a team, headed by the DIG Operations, would be set up to oversee the enforcement.
