Naomi Oyeniyi, contemporary Nigerian artist, master of capturing emotions on canvas

With a Bachelor of Art degree from the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, the artist has carved out a notch up in visual art space with specialization in painting.

She has established herself as a visionary in the art world through her distinctive style, which embraces a physical approach to painting, and characterised by heavy strokes, sleight of hand, and layering techniques that breathe life into her creations.

Her body of work goes beyond aesthetics. She delves into the depths of human emotions and the complex dynamics of familial and social relationships with her art, which transcends preconceived notions of mental well-being, offering the viewer a chance to contemplate and explore the impact of these relationships on her perceptions of reality.

Through dense impasto compositions, layered surfaces, and a rich, vibrant palette that seeks to capture light and shadow, her paintings evoke powerful emotional responses and invite introspection.

To bring her artistic vision to life, she pours her heart and soul into every piece, from the initial conceptualization of ideas to the meticulous sourcing of materials, and the painstaking execution on primed canvas. Each stroke and brush stroke is a deliberate act, as she meticulously crafts her paintings with unwavering attention to detail.

The process is not rushed; it is a labour of love that takes an entire year to complete by ensuring that every artwork is a testament to her artistic brilliance.

She breaks out of her studio engagement for a solo exhibition, which comes up on the 23rd- 31st, July 2023 at the walls of Tribe XX lab, Ikoyi, the vibrant city of Lagos.

The walls of Tribe XX lab, venue of the exhibition, will come alive with the artist’s thought-provoking, artistic creations which is curated by the talented Emalohi Iruobe.

The exhibition will showcase 18 exquisite paintings that promise to intrigue and captivate the audience. Visitors to the exhibition will encounter amazing and colorful art pieces from this world class artist the moment they lay their eyes on each art piece. “In fact they will be transported into a realm of emotions, a world where colours and textures merge to create a mesmerizing visual experience,” she tells art reporters.

Her expectations for this exhibition are clear. Her words. “I hope that people will connect with my body of work on a profound level by allowing each piece to resonate within them. My aspiration is to spark conversations and evoke emotions that transcend the boundaries of language and culture.”

Through her art, she aims to touch hearts, open minds, and inspire positive change with this debut solo exhibition, which marks a significant milestone in her artistic journey. It is by no means, her first foray into the art world. Though she has actively participated in numerous group exhibitions, leaving her mark on prestigious galleries and venues across Nigeria.
