NCoS probes escape of murder suspect in Sapele

The late Onojaiyefe

The Nigerian Correctional Service has commenced investigation into last weekend’s mysterious escape of a murder suspect in Sapele, Delta State.

The Guardian learnt that Paul Michael, who was in custody for killing one Kelly Onojaiyefe, a furniture apprentice in Oghara town, Ethiope West Local Council of the state, escaped, a day after the new controller of the state correctional centre, Mr Raymond Neagu, resumed office.

Michael’s sudden disappearance has raised concerns over the security architecture at the Sapele correctional centre.

The Guardian had reported that three suspects were arrested in connection with the alleged murder of the 29-year-old Kelly, who was reportedly stabbed several times in the head.

Confirming the incident yesterday, spokesperson for the centre, Allen Iloba, said the command was still wondering how the accused escaped, despite tight security at the facility.

He said the controller was peeved by the development and immediately launched an investigation.

He said: “The controller has set up an investigative team. He is the one chairing the team under the instructions of Controller General Zone G. Whoever is found culpable will be sanctioned accordingly. There is no cause for alarm, as the controller has sent out a search team to capture the escapee anywhere, and any day.”
