NESREA seals facilities in Abuja for environmental non-compliance

NESREA Director General, Prof. Aliyu Jauro

The National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has sealed factories and estates in Abuja for failure to comply with the environmental laws.

The facilities are located at premises of Veritas Plastics, Almat Farms, Dayak Nigeria Limited, FIK Contracting Limited, Salis Ventilated Homes Ltd, Peachville Estate, Net Construction Nigeria Limited, Sazak Acre Bilogue, B D’alberto Ltd, Efab Properties Ltd, Homes, Phinada Mill and Skippers Electronics.

The agency’s Director General, Prof Jauro Aliyu, told journalists that the exercise in Abuja was a fall-out of the Federal Ministry of Environment’s retreat in Kaduna, on Environmental Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement.

Aliyu, who was represented by the Director, Inspection and Enforcement, Abdulsalam Isa, explained that part of their mandate is to ensure compliance, enforce compliance with extant environmental standards, guidelines, rules and regulations.

“The owners of the facilities failed to comply with environmental concerns ranging from Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Audit (EA), environmental management plans, and environmental permits both in the green and brown Environment,” he stressed.

The Director General further stated that a total of ten facilities in the green sector and three in the brown sector were sealed, adding that the agency followed due process in clamping down after exhausting all relevant communications in respect of their environmental status.

“We observed that some of the facilities earlier sealed had broken the Federal Government seals, however, such facilities are to face punitive measures for their actions. We frown at the high level of non-compliance of facilities to environmental laws and will replicate enforcement in all states of the federation.”
