Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has assured that the College of Education, Abudu, would strengthen the training of teachers in the use of technology for quality teaching.

The governor gave the assurance after inspecting ongoing construction work at the College of Education in Abudu, Orhionmwon local government area of Edo State.

According to him, the college would focus on training teachers for pre-primary and primary schools, noting, “The right facilities will be put in place so that we can train teachers practically in the use of technology, which will enable them use technology to train children and imbue in them the culture of technology from tender age.

Obaseki noted that the College of Education in Igueben would focus on training teachers who will teach technical subjects, while the one in Afuze would focus on special education.

With the pace of work at the site, the governor expressed hope that the school will be opened to students before the end of July.

Already, he said the accreditation team has been to the school and expressed hope that things would go on smoothly.

He said: “It has been an unusual year. In the last one year, not much has happened. The contractors had to leave the site to protect their workers. The supply chain has been disrupted. Despite the delay, you will agree with me that a lot have been achieved. Work has progressed at a pace slightly ahead of what we expected because of coronavirus. Some of the other campuses have students. We are scaling up the number of students by expanding the number of facilities.”

Responding, National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South South, Chief Dan Orbih, said the project has shown that the present administration in the state is serious about what it is doing.

“I can say that the South-South is setting the pace in terms of development. What you are seeing in Edo State is being replicated in all PDP states in the zone.  That is why Nigerians are yearning and looking forward to a PDP Federal Government,” Orbih added.

PDP Chairman in the state, Mr. Tony Aziegbemi commended the quality of work at the college, saying with the effect of COVID-19, one would have thought there would not be funds to execute the project.
