41m Nigerians lack access to potable water

The State of the World’s Water released by WaterAid has revealed that 41million people in rural parts of the country are still without access to potable water.

The report tagged, Wild Water: the State of World’s Water, made available to journalists in Abuja, noted that 663million globally are without clean water and the vast majority of them, 522million live in rural areas.

It was revealed that the communities face challenges gaining access to clean water, due to being in isolated location, inadequate infrastructure and continued lack of funding.

Examining the vulnerability of rural communities around the world to extreme events resulting from climate change like cyclones, ruinous flooding and prolonged drought, the report warned that changes in weather patterns could make it harder for the world’s poorest people to access clean water.

The Chief Executive WaterAid UK, Barbara Frost, noted that the extreme weather events would make the daily struggle of accessing clean water more difficult for poor people.

WaterAid Nigeria Country Director, Michael Ojo, called on the government and others around the world to keep their commitment to SDG goals and ensure everyone is able to realise their right to clean water by 2030.
