Plot to exploit situation to engineer a state of emergency will be resisted, CISLAC warns

Amidst the rumble of Emirship tussle in Kano State, security operatives have read the riot act against orchestrated plot to set the state House of Assembly ablaze.

Besides, the operatives revealed that intelligent information has indicated grand plot by sponsored elements to set the Assembly and residence of top members of the state legislature on fire.

Kano Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, who led a joint security press briefing on Sunday night told journalists that operatives including the military are prepared to dislodge and disarm the plotters.

Against the background, the CP disclosed that joint security operatives will henceforth commence house to house search to fish out those plotting the criminal act and their sponsors.

According to CP Gumel: ” Against the controversy surrounding the chieftaincy issue in Kano, we have uncovered through credible intelligence plans by some miscreants paid to unleash terror in Kano.

“At the heel of their plans are target to attack the state House of Assembly and residences of key members of the Assembly. The intelligence has been verified by the security. Let me use this opportunity to say the security has the capacity to tame the evil forces.

“We are embarking on security patrol beginning this night and House to House search to uncover those behind the plot. Let me use this opportunity to say Kano is peaceful, calm and safe. We make bold to say nobody can override the decision taken by the security council of the state,” CP Gumel declared.

On the emirship controversy, the CP insisted that an action has been perfected by the state government adding that anyone in doubt should approach the court.

He appealed to Kano residents to embark on their lawful businesses without fear of intimidation and molestation, adding that security will not tolerate any act that will jeopardize the peace and harmony of the state.

Meanwhile, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing power tussle involving the reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and the dethroned emir, Aminu Bayero.

CISLAC warns that these developments threaten to plunge Kano into chaos and anarchy, undermining the peace and stability of the broader Northern Nigeria region.

The executive director of CISLAC, Auwal Rafsanjani, issued a stern warning against any attempts to exploit the situation to declare a state of emergency in Kano State.

He stated: “Such actions are viewed as reckless and unnecessary provocations that could dismantle over 1,000 years of Kano’s political heritage.”

“CISLAC notes with alarm that the court ruling, which security operatives are relying on, facilitated the controversial return of Emir Aminu Bayero. This ruling was issued by a judge who is currently out of the country and not in office. This situation raises significant concerns about the legitimacy and appropriateness of the court order,” Rafsanjani said.

The reliance on what CISLAC describes as a ‘kangaroo court order’ to justify the police and other security operatives invasion of Kano State is deeply troubling and exacerbates tensions.”

The statement further asserts that the state government holds the constitutional power to appoint and confirm traditional leaders, including the Emir.

“The attempt to usurp this power and push the state into a state of anarchy is unacceptable,”

Rafsanjani emphasized: “CISLAC firmly believes that the autonomy of the Kano State Government in managing its traditional institutions must be respected to avoid further conflict.”

CISLAC urges President Bola Tinubu to resist any attempts by desperate politicians to disrupt the peace and harmony currently prevailing in Kano State. “The Federal Government must not allow itself to be used as a tool to further political interests that jeopardize the stability of the state and region,” Rafsanjani warned.

As a staunch advocate for democracy and peace, CISLAC stands firmly against any form of violence and abuse of institutional power in Kano State.
