Ashake Foundation was delighted to introduce the Community Change Makers Initiative project aimed at training young girls within the ages of 12 to 18 years on leadership development, menstrual hygiene, marketable skills and personal affirmations to help the girls develop and maintain good self-esteem.

The event kicked off on the 26th of June and through 10th July 2021 in Mararaba, Kabusa, Piwoyi, Galadimawa and Dogongada communities in Abuja.

Speaking on the importance of the initiative, founder of the organisation, Mrs. Mayowa Adegbile, said; “I am excited about this project because I am very particular about the problems young girls in rural communities are faced with on a daily and monthly basis.

“For every 20 school days in a month, ten girls skip classes for five days due to lack of access to sanitary napkins and the health challenges that are associated with using rags as an alternative to sanitary napkins such as infection as a result of poor menstrual hygiene practice that accounts for why the organisation is keen on teaching these girls the need for menstrual hygiene management and give six months’ supply of sanitary napkins to 178 girls from the communities visited”.

To consolidate the project, the organisation introduced leadership development, self-discovery, as well as digital skills and entrepreneurial training. The goal of this project was geared to groom young girls to be change-makers by identifying and solving issues in their communities.

To foster continuity of the initiative, the organization created a WhatsApp group for the girls to share and discuss pet projects, get mentorship opportunities and other self-development opportunities.

The team accomplished this relentless effort through the support of its partners consisting of Mrs. Fehintola Simeon-Umukoro, Mrs. Esther Oludare, Okeke Grace Eche, benevolent donors and the host communities.
