Benue govt gets deadline over workers’ pay
THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Benue State Chapter, yesterday issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government to pay all the outstanding salary arrears owed different categories of civil servants in the state.
In a letter signed by the state NLC Chairman, Mr. Simon Anchaver and Secretary, Mr. Jumpa Emmanuel, the union also warned that failure of the government to address the issue would leave them with no other option than to shut down activities and declare a trade dispute with Governor Gabriel Suswam’s led administration.
The Guardian learnt that the decision of the Labour leadership in the state was taken in consultation with its national secretariat, which directed that the ultimatum be served on the government commencing from April 14 and to expire on April 21, this year.
“That all outstanding salary arrears owed all categories of core public servants, including primary school teachers, local council members of staff as well as pensioners should be paid forthwith within the time-frame of the ultimatum.
“That the salary for the month of March 2015 shall be the payment of the full negotiated national minimum wage agreed and implemented in the state having exhausted the concessionary period of levy, donation and contribution,” the letter read in part.
The union, which noted with dismay that the undulated and irregular salary payment had characterised the workforce in the state for over eight months, leaving most ministries and parastatals several months in arrears which ranged between four and six months accompanied with denial of other benefits, further said that such manner and mode of salary payment have exposed the working class in the state to a lot of untold hardship and difficulties which adverse effect pauperise workers, leading some individuals to early death as well as other forms of diseases and embarrassment.
Meanwhile, the state government, through the Director, Media and Public Affairs, James Uloko, said it was yet to receive such a letter indicating the seven-day deadline by the NLC. “As I speak with you now, the state executives are meeting but we don’t have the knowledge of the letter yet,” Uloko stated.
