Buhari okays Adesina for AfDB presidency
PRESIDENT-ELECT, Muhammadu Buhari, has expressed support for Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, the Agriculture minister, who is vying for the office of the African Development Bank (AfDB) president.
Buhari has also requested the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to back the minister. In a statement released on his behalf by Malam Garba Shehu, the President-elect revealed that he has communicated his support of Adesina’s candidacy to Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama, the current chairperson of the ECOWAS.
General Buhari said that his support for Adesina is not based on nationality, but on his proven ability to discharge his duties efficiently.
“Dr. Adesina has a proven track record in a career that predates his position as Nigeria’s Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development,” General Buhari said.
He added that Adesina had worked in Francophone and Anglophone countries, where he helped to eradicate poverty in Africa by reducing unemployment and inequality among youths.
Adesina is also an agricultural development expert with 24 years of experience in developing and managing successful programmes across the continent.
