I salute the four leaders who have written the letter to president Nkurunziza. However, the contents of the letter reflect their sentiments, which should in no way be regarded as a constitutional position insofar as the Burundian incumbent president’s right to run again for the office is concerned. Given that the Burundian Constitutional Court already decided the issue, it is no longer a matter of presumption – but a confirmed position of law – that president Nkurunziza holds a right to vie for the presidency of the Republic of Burundi. A letter to a president who is determined to claim his constitutional right as any one could – cannot reverse the position already settled by the Constitional Court. The only recourse would be to ask the same Court to revise its decision if the legal conditions for such revision exist.
