Calabar FCMB security breach: bank systems and funds remain intact

Following Monday’s incident at the Calabar New Secretariat branch of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), in which an individual gained unauthorised access to the bank by concealing himself in a restroom and remaining within the premises after business hours, The Guardian can confirm that no data or funds were compromised.

The breach, which occurred on Monday, 30 June, involved an unidentified individual who reportedly hid in the branch’s restroom and remained on the premises after closing hours. The individual was discovered and apprehended by staff the following morning, shortly after operations resumed.

Law enforcement agencies were immediately alerted, and an investigation is now underway. Bank sources confirmed that the incident did not involve any compromise of its digital infrastructure.

“There was no system hack, data breach, or unauthorised access to customer funds,” a source close to the matter told our reporter. “Contrary to some online claims, no computer terminals displayed suspicious prompts such as ‘restarting, click OK to accept’.”

The intrusion, according to the source—who preferred anonymity as he wasn’t authorised to speak on behalf of the bank—was strictly physical and isolated to the affected branch. All critical systems, including core banking platforms and data protection frameworks, remained secure and operational.

The highly-placed source also told our reporter that FCMB is working closely with security authorities to investigate the motive and background of the suspect. The source also assured the public that security protocols at all branches are being continuously reviewed to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
