Centre to empower PWDs with digital skills

Accesstech Innovation and Research Centre has pledged to offer professional trainings such as digital content inclusive for the visually-impaired persons, dyslexic, and others.

Speaking at the workshop to commemorate the Global Accessibility Awareness Day, in Lagos, the Chief Executive Officers (CEO) of Accesstech Innovation and Research Centre, Opeolu Akinola, said the event was the first in a series of workshops by Accesstech to change the narrative around disabilities.

Akinola explained that Accesstech Innovation and Research Centre Limited is a non-profit organisation committed to fostering the inclusion of persons with disabilities through public enlightenment and empowering them through products and services. ”

This is to enable them to access quality education, decent jobs and economic growth, thereby, reducing inequality in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.

He said in the last nine months, the centre has trained more than 200 visually impaired persons in tech skills such as python for data analytics, advanced Microsoft Excel and basic Microsoft productivity tools among others.

He noted that when someone is visually impaired, it is not end of life, but the beginning of a new journey therefore, people living with disabilities should be put first in the society.

Chief Operations Officer of Accesstech Innovation and Research Centre, Emmanuella Akinola, said the centre decided to involve media personnel in their trainings because apart from access to information being a matter of human right. She said by incorporating accessibility best practices, journalists could engage a wider audience to interact with their content.
