Pacelli school for visually impaired children, Surulere, Lagos, yesterday, called for financial support from government and the private sector. The immediate past principal of the school, established by Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Sister Jane Onyeneri, gave the call at the school’s Christmas carol.
She noted that the school lacks funds for smooth running and lacks educational materials, such as desktop, tape recorders, writing frames, mathematics frames, among others.
“I am appealing to the government to support us financially because in a month we pay 1.5 million for salaries. So we need them to support us financially and also give us mobility,” she appealed.
On the school’s carol, Onyeneri said “We use this opportunity to remember when Christ was born to create that awareness among children and it also is a period for the school to say thank you to our friends and benefactors who have been supporting the school.”
She said the school has a population of 140 children, and they encourage children visually impairment out there to come to Pacelli and get free education.
Also, the current principal, Sister Agnes Chinyere Onwudiwe, said the school takes care of children with partial or full sight impairment through gifts given them from friends and benefactors, and calls for government’s support.
“These children are also human beings, like everyone else. It is just the opportunity they don’t have and many of them are from very poor homes. So, we want government to support these children.”
