CISLAC applauds as EFCC, Immigration repatriate 51 more convicted foreigners

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) have repatriated 51 more foreign nationals convicted and sentenced for cyber-terrorism and internet fraud.

The repatriated foreign nationals include 50 Chinese and one Tunisian, bringing the total repatriated convicted foreign nationals to 102 in the ongoing exercise that commenced on August 15.

The convicts are among the 192 foreign nationals arrested during a sting operation by the Commission in Lagos, following actionable intelligence about the operations of one of the largest foreign-led cybercrime syndicates in Nigeria.

Further deportations are scheduled in the coming days.

FOLLOWING the development, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC) has commended the EFCC for cracking down on the syndicate.

Commending the EFCC for its professionalism, CISLAC’s Executive Director, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, said the arrest underscored the commission’s dedication to tackling cybercrime at the highest level, adding that it proved that the crimes were often orchestrated by international actors who exploit vulnerable Nigerians for their schemes.

He reiterated that the operation had debunked the harmful stereotype that Nigerians are the main perpetrators of cybercrime.

He also warned that such narratives had long damaged Nigeria’s international reputation and obscured the role of foreign actors operating behind the scenes.
