Edo automates tax system, nets N52.6b IGR in six months

The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) on Thursday stated that it is currently driving the automation of tax processes in the state to ensure smooth operation, reduce incidences of tax diversion and leakages, and increase revenue.

The EIRS also disclosed that it recorded a total of N52.6 billion as against a half-year budgeted figure of N58.8 billion, representing 89.5 per cent performance year-to-date.

Briefing newsmen on the Half-Year performance review, Executive Chairman EIRS, Otunba Oladele Bankole-Balogun, said it has engaged a technical service provider to implement comprehensive tax administration and automation solutions.

Bankole-Balogun said the EIRS has recorded several milestones in the first half of the year under review, which include raking in a total of N52.6 billion, against a half-year budgeted figure of N58.8 billion, representing an 89.5 per cent performance year-to-date.

He added that the EIRS results speak for themselves, stating that in January 2025, it recorded N10.4billion, February 2025: N9.6 billion, March 2025: N6.9 billion, April 2025: N6.9billion, May 2025: N7.8billion and June 2025: Over N11 billion, which is half-year-to-date (HYTD) 2025 total of N52.6billion.

According to him, in contrast, HI 2024 recorded a total of N36.1 billion, indicating a 46 per cent increase in revenue performance year-on-year.

Bankole-Balogun said the achievement is historic, as it reflects the synergy between the staff, management, and, most importantly, the unwavering support of the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa.

Bankole-Balogun appreciated the taxpayers of Edo State, including individuals, corporations, and government MDAs, whose level of compliance has been instrumental to its success.

He pledged to create an opportunity for people to pay their taxes in a simple and seamless approach.

Bankole-Balogun emphasised that the EIRS’ achievement in 6 months under his watch has recorded a 50 per cent increase compared to what was recorded in the same period in 2024 (January to June) under the previous administration.
