Embassy to probe claim Chinese firm abandoned Nigerian miners in CAR

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has responded sharply to a trending video in which some Nigerian citizens allege that they were miners recruited by a Chinese mining enterprise and subsequently abandoned in the Central African Republic.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Embassy said it attaches great importance to the matter and has initiated an immediate investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding the allegation.

According to the statement, the Chinese government has consistently admonished all Chinese enterprises operating globally to strictly comply with the laws and regulations of their host countries.

“The Chinese government consistently mandates that all Chinese enterprises and citizens operating abroad strictly comply with local laws and regulations, ensuring that all business operations fully adhere to local legal frameworks,” the statement read in part.

The embassy also urged that the matter be addressed appropriately and called for close communication with Nigerian authorities throughout the course of the investigation.

It emphasized the importance of working together to safeguard the rights and welfare of citizens.

“The Chinese side will urge the involved companies to address this matter appropriately, maintain close communication with Nigerian authorities throughout the investigation, and work together to safeguard the lawful rights and interests of citizens of both nations,” the statement added.
