The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for not interfering in the tussle for the traditional seat in the ancient city.

On Thursday, May 23, 2024, the Kano State House of Assembly passed a bill that repealed the Emirate Council 2019 law after its first reading. The 2024 repeal law scrapped the entire five emirates, with specific provisions that reversed all actions contained in the abolished law.

Kano State Governor Yusuf assented to the repeal of the emirate law 2024, and on Friday, May 24, 2024, declared the return of Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano, a move that saw the dethronement of Aminu Ado Bayero.

Prior to Friday’s reinstatement of Sanusi, a group under the auspices of the Concerned Patriots of Nigeria stormed the Presidential Villa and the National Assembly in Abuja, calling on President Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing crisis affecting the Kano Emirate.

But speaking after his reinstatement, Sanusi expressed gratitude to the President for not allowing himself to be dragged into what he referred to as a local matter.

“I would like to express my thanks to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, without whose principled stance of non-interference in the internal affairs of the state, this would not have been possible,” the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor said in a video posted on the X handle of Jubril Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“The President has shown that he is a respecter of the constitution and the separation of powers. He recognizes that this is a purely local matter and that the government has a responsibility to do what is right for the state, and I’m aware he has resisted all pressure to get the federal government involved.”
