Engineers want FG to diversify electricity source
The Federal Government has been urged to diversify power source by using solar energy to boost electricity supply in the country.
Dr Bamidele Dahunsi, former Director, Professional Department, Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE), made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Dahunsi said that at this stage in the country, street lights should be solar-powered, adding that solar technology was available for utilisation.
“ The technology has become available everywhere; it is cheap and available now; traffic lights, our surveillance equipment should be solar-powered.
`Individual houses should be solar-powered; we should also use energy saving bulbs in our houses.
“If we do all those things, a lot of power will be freed which can now be used for developmental purposes; it can be diverted to industries,’’ he said.
He said that the country had not been utilising its renewable energy potential, noting that the country was close to the equator.
“We have good solar insulation, so we should make use of that to get solar energy,’’ Dahunsi said.

Amazing that this lucky nation endowed with abundant sunshine, geologic thermal vents and wind etc has never delivered a single kilowatt of solar, wind or hydrothermal energy to its national grid
We will review and take appropriate action.
