Police officers are maintaining a heavy presence at the Afe Babalola Chambers in Lagos, following plans by the ‘Take It Back Movement’ to stage a protest.
The movement, led by activist Omoyele Sowore, is protesting the prosecution of Dele Farotimi, a human rights advocate.
Sowore had called for nationwide and international demonstrations, scheduled to begin on 10 December at locations including the Afe Babalola Chambers in Lagos, the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, the Police Headquarters in Ekiti, and a venue in London.
While protesters are yet to be seen at the identified sites, police patrol vans have been stationed at some of the locations.
Farotimi is being tried after a petition was filed by Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) who claimed the lawyer defamed him in his book, titled, ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.’
The defendant, who was arrested in Lagos and taken to Ekiti for the trial, was granted bail in the sum of N50 million.
The inspector-general of police subsequently filed a 12-count charge against him under cybercrime laws.
