
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has demolished illegal shops built along Jabi Airport road , causing obstructions.
Team of security operatives that carried out the exercise, include members of the Abuja Environmental Protection Nigerian Police Force; Department of State Services (DSS); Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC); Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO); Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), among others.
A trader, who spoke with The Guardian blamed FCT authorities for inflicting hardship on traders who sell along the area, saying: “The FCT administration commenced demolition without informing us about it.”
Another card seller, who refused to mention her name said: “We are Nigerians. But what they are doing is not good. They didn’t give us notice, they demolished our shops were we look for daily food. I don’t know why our political leaders are not here”.
Some of those who properties were affected told The Guardian that they were not given enough notice before the demolition, describing it as the height of insensitivity on the part of government.
Reacting, the Chief of Jabi Masalachi village, Yakubu Auta, said: “Some members of the tax force came to warn the people who were blocking the road to the market, and they started evacuation immediately.”
He noted that he was not given notice before the demolition, adding that the authority only informed him during the demolition.
Auta said that the demolition followed a series of complaints by car users.
