FG to recruit more health workers, says minister

The Federal Government is set to recruit more staff to reduce the workload on medical personnel and increase funding for the health sector to provide quality health services to Nigerians, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, has said in Asaba, Delta State.

Addressing journalists shortly after an official inspection of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, Dr. Salako said the Federal Government would support health institutions across the country for the benefit of all.

“Government will provide your welfare, the necessary equipment to work with, and an enabling environment to deliver good health care services to the people,” he said.

While advising health workers to be diligent, he urged them to provide quality health care services to patients and treat them with respect.

“They should be handled with a lot of empathy, without giving unnecessary excuses because we value quality care for our patients. If the professionals do not have the right attitude, then you will not be able to deliver the best quality services. So, I want to encourage you to prioritize quality health care services for patients.

“You must provide quality care services to patients, and you must welcome them each time they come for medical attention. Patients should be treated as human beings with a lot of empathy, which is more of a priority to us than building infrastructure,” the Minister warned.

Dr. Iziaq Salako, who was received by the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of FMC Asaba, Dr. Victor Osiatuma, commended the management for its remarkable infrastructural and clinical advancements, saying, “I’m very much impressed with the progress recorded so far despite the prevailing challenges.”

The minister, however, identified limited space as one of the major challenges hindering the expansion of FMC Asaba and its capacity to integrate new medical innovations.
