THE governorship candidates of four political parties in Abia State have withdrawn from the contest and adopted Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as their consensus candidate.

The four gubernatorial candidates are Dr. Gilbert Chikezie of the Independent Democrat (ID), Dan Onyeonagu of KOWA, Ifeoma Okpara of Citizens Popular Party (CPP) and Prince Sunday Isaac of People for Democratic Change (PDC).

Speaking while announcing their declaration in Umuahia, Chikezie of ID said they resolved to support Ikpeazu in the best interest of the state.

“We carefully considered the political situation in the state and thought it wise that it is in the best interest of the state that we drop our governorship bids and adopt the governorship candidate of the PDP, Dr. Ikpeazu as a consensus candidate in next Saturday gubernatorial election,” he said.

Meanwhile, two United Progressive Party (UPP) candidates vying for the state House of Assembly seats, Mr. Emeka Nwoke for Ohafia South constituency and Ananaba Uzoma for Ugwunagbo Constituency and over 200 of their supporters and party members from Obingwa, Ugwunagbo, Ohafia, Umunneochi Local Council Areas of the state recently joined the PDP in Umuahia and were received at the PDP Secretariat. The UPP decampees told the PDP Chairman, Senator Emma Nwaka, who was represented by the state Secretary, Charles Esonu, that they lately realised that UPP had no direction and was not firmly rooted in the state and pleaded with the PDP not to treat or see them as new comers.
