The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged motorists and road users to adopt safer driving behaviours to prevent accidents and reduce the loss of lives and property.

Oyo State FRSC Sector Commander Rosemary Alo made this appeal yesterday in Ibadan during the commemoration of the 2024 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash (RTC) Victims.

Alo explained that this year’s remembrance day theme, “That Day,” was chosen to underscore the life-altering impact of road traffic crashes, symbolising the moment when a victim’s life is changed forever.

She emphasised that road traffic crashes tend to claim more lives among passengers than drivers, stressing the need for all road users to recognise that road safety is a shared responsibility.

According to her, the FRSC would prioritise monitoring roads under construction and areas identified as accident black spots to prevent further casualties.

“We want to appeal to the conscience and consciousness of road users to embrace safe practices,” she said. “Passengers should be aware of their right to report reckless driving. They should not remain silent or complacent.” Alo assured the public that the FRSC would continue collaborating with stakeholders to enhance public enlightenment programmes and enforce traffic rules to deter violators.

“We advocate for an attitudinal change among drivers, tricyclists, cyclists, and the general public. We appeal to all road users to obey traffic regulations and ensure safety, particularly during and after the year-end festivities,” she added.
