Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has charged the media to contribute toward promotion of better management of migration in the country.

Ganduje made the call in Kano at a one-day Training Workshop on migration issues in Nigeria organised for journalists on Monday.

The workshop was organized by an NGO, Policy Consult, in collaboration with International Organisation for Migration (IOM), National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI).

The governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Alhaji Musa Garba, said the call was necessary because migration was now a global phenomenon.

”The issue of migration is a global phenomenon, hence the need for journalists to promote better management of the issue in Nigeria,” he said.

He said the workshop was also timely as it would enable journalists be abreast with migration-related issues.

”So, the media should help the government to address the issue and ensure its better management,”, he said.

Earlier, the Director in the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Hajiya Amina Faruk, said the Federal Government`s decision to develop the National Migration Policy (NMP) was due to its desire and commitment to protect the welfare of all categories of migrants irrespective of their status.

She, therefore, called on the participants to make the best use of the opportunity to promote regular migration and deter irregular migration and also protect the good image of the country.

NAN reports that the participants were drawn from the North-West geo-political zone.
