Group laments NAEC Chief Ahmed’s refusal to quit after tenure

A coalition of Civil Society Groups on Transparency and Accountability has decried the alleged refusal of the Chairman/CEO of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Prof. Aminu Ahmed, to step down, one month and three weeks after his tenure ended.

At a press conference addressed by Comrade Igwe Ude-Umanta, the coalition claimed that Prof. Ahmed’s tenure, which began on September 3, 2021, under former President Muhammadu Buhari, expired on September 3, 2024.

Expressing concern over the development, the coalition called on the authorities to correct the anomaly in the nation’s interest.

They threatened to send multiple letters to relevant authorities, including the EFCC and ICPC, seeking clarification on how the earlier petition against Prof. Ahmed was concluded.

The coalition also urged the DSS to retrieve the Commission’s properties and documents, which Prof. Ahmed allegedly refused to hand over to the Acting Chairman.

“This is a matter of state security, and we hope to see prompt action in that direction. Gentlemen of the press, we invite you to join us in keeping vigil on this matter. It must not be swept under the carpet. We will pursue this case to understand why those suspected, with substantial evidence, of misappropriating government property are allowed to walk freely in a country with so many security agencies and anti-corruption bodies,” they stated.
