Group seeks firms’ support to care for the needy

A non-governmental Organisation (NGO), Selfworth Organisation for Women Development, has urged corporate firms to partner with it to achieve its objectives of empowering women from rural and urban areas in Nigeria with free vocational skills.

Executive Director of the organisation, Mrs. Chinyere Anokwuru, noted that the NGO’s investment on local women and widows would help them acquire economic survival skills.

She said: “We shall support them with tools and resources to start up small businesses to help ease the conflict between work and family responsibilities – one of the many reasons for women’s economic inequality and domestic violence.”Also, the organisation’s brand ambassador, Bolanle Olukanni, expressed concern over the marginalisation of widows in the country.

Olukanni, who stated that a documentary titled “God’s Wives” that sheds light on the plight of widows in Nigeria would be premiered soon, said the documentary was inspired after she began working with widows from the Self-Worth Empowerment centre.

Chinyere said 76 widows were empowered recently by the organisation in dress-making, make-up and catering, adding that in line with the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals, the NGO is planning to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education, promote life-long learning opportunities for all, achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls and promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, among others.
